Art as Journey.

Notes:

The Red palm Tree: The palm is an image of paradise for many -- a place of pleasure.
Red, however, is seen to represent passion, blood, violence, anger and danger.
Here there is a conflict of perception; between the received, the symbolic and the desired.

Re: Dufy: The red Mosque.
Macke (and Jimi Hendrix): The Red House.

The Red sails: lanteen sails on working boats found in the Mediterranean.
The mizen mast sails on the fishing boats in Suruga Bay. Art as a journey, art as economic activity.

Re: David bowie; Red Sails.
      Dufy: The Black Cargo

Absraction/The Decorative < Expressionism < Naturalism/Representation

The Ideal (Apolloism)

Naturalism/Representation > Expressionism  >The Gestural/Hand-writing as Painting (graffiti)

                                     Of the earth (Dyonysus)

The styles and manner employed in these works trace the ideas associated with the approach
to aesthetics; the movement away from the natural to the ideal (as expressed as Apollioan),
or, towards the Earthly (as expressed freely as Dyonysusian).

And, from Amiel: "A Landscape is a state of mind".

Other Motifs:

The Eye: That by which we perceive. However, refers to francis Picabia's L"'oeil cacodylate, Dada, and obliquely to Georges Bataille's "The Story of the Eye".

Latitude: 35o North -- the line that circles the globe, cutting through Miho, Shizuoka,
just south of Tangiers, Morocco and north of Los Angeles, U.S.A. It is more
about the common flora of these locations; Phoenix Canariaris,
Cicad Revoluta Thum, the Fan palms and so on.
A way to connnect places, form a tenuous relationship.

The Name: Cote d'Or -- Gold Coast; the name of a famous Belgian chocolate
(shades of colonial history), a dream place.

The Colour: The colours in clear light of August Macke/Paul Klee's water-colours from Tunisia.

This exhibition is a revisiting, a sort of anthology,
which covers the period 1976 through 2001 -- twenty-five years.
It is dedicated to S. G.
